Dating After 40: The Dangers of Idealization

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By R.L. Morgan On a third date, a guy and I were sharing how well we both felt we got along and how well matched we seemed to be. He surprised me when he said, Dont idealize me. I hadnt been. I was clear on his imperfections, yet was enjoying the parts that I liked. It can be easy to idealize someone after a few dates if he seems to fit your perfect-guy criteria. About another man I wrote in my journal, There were no red flags - is that a red flag that he has no immediately detectable flaws? Seeing no detectable flaws is a very good sign that you are idealizing. If you feel yourself falling head over your Jimmy Choos within the first few dates, that is another sign. You are overlooking potential red or at least yellow flags. You may say, Whats the problem with idealizing? Isnt that what being in love is? You only see the positives of the subject of your ardor? Idealizing means you barely notice any foibles. And if you do observe them, you dismiss their being a problem. Hes always late for your dates? He just gets distracted at work. He didnt remember your birthday? He has so much on his mind he forgot. He doesnt apologize when he inconveniences you? He means to, but its hard for him. And on and on we go, offering excuses to anyone who asks. However, what if he idealizes you? One man I dated came close to this. It seemed I could do no wrong. And if I did something like be late for a date, although I called to let him know I was stuck in traffic, he brushed over any hint that I could do anything untoward. While it was nice to have the ground beneath my feet worshipped, I knew it also meant that I would be tumbling from my pedestal at some point. That time came 7 weeks into our dating when he emailed me that hed like us to just be friends. I dont know how long chunks had been falling from my marble column. So while it can be exhilarating to be in the bliss of adoring someone so much you hardly note the gnats of his failings, it is also dangerous as its easy to lose your heart, and with it your common sense. Best to have the strength to ask a few good friends what they see, and not get defensive when they point out what your blind spot is blocking. And while it can be flattering and ego enhancing to be on the receiving end of idealized adoration, know that it is not healthy. Your eventual fall from the pedestal can be painful if you dont help your devotee see that his effusiveness is not entirely warranted. R.L. Great Beauty Secrets You Must Know

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Adam Asar BEAUTY THROUGHOUT THE AGES If you think today’s obsession with beauty is something new, think again! Men AND women have been in touch with their bodies and beauty dating back as far as the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptian’s concern was based as much on pleasing the gods of their time as it was for personal adornment. In fact, it could be said that they prepared their bodies more for the afterlife than the current time. All one need do is read about the tombs and mummies that have been excavated and study what was found. Lavish pictorial examples reveal how extravagantly the aristocracy lived their lives. Just take a look at the detail the next time you have an opportunity to view Egyptian archaeology reports. Gold and silver bracelets, lapis and jade pendants, rings of gold studded with semi-precious stones. All are evidence of just how deeply involved the human race is with beauty and adornments. IS BEAUTY REALLY SKIN DEEP? The answer is yes and no. Its a paradox, isnt it? True beauty begins from the inside out. Dont you wish there were some way to wriggle your nose and regain that soft skin you had as a child? Well, until someone comes up with the true Fountain of Youth, we are stuck with what we have. The best route to healthy skin is to take care of what you have. Sounds simple, doesnt it? The truth is that your skin takes a beating from the environment every single day. Here are some of our favorite tips for keeping your skin fresh and healthy: 1. Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of water! That doesnt mean soda, caffeine or any other type of liquid even if it is low cal. Soda (even diet soda) has a high concentration of sodium. Sodium retains fluids. You need fluid that will hydrate and flush your body free of toxins. Make sure you are drinking at least 8 glasses a day! 2. Protect your skin from harmful ultra violet (UV) rays. We all love the sun. We love being in it and we love having a beautiful tan. The truth is you can poison yourself with too much sunshine. UV rays cause skin cancer, and if that isnt bad enough, it causes your skin to age faster than it should, contributing to unsightly wrinkles. If you must play in the sun, make certain you are using an adequate sun screen. Dont leave home without it! 3. Apply your sun screen even if you only make a quick trip to the grocery store. Yes, you can get harmful UV rays even while driving your car! 4. When you purchase sun screen, make certain you are buying the right tool for the job. There are different types of UV rays and they dont all affect our skin in the same ways. The time of year also has a bearing on how much damage the sun can do to your skin. Altitude is another important factor. UV rays are more intense at high altitudes. Sunshine alone is not the culprit. You can do just as much damage to your skin (or in some cases even more) on a cloudy day! 5. Dont forget sun screen for your lips. They want to be healthy too! 6. Apply your sunscreen BEFORE going outdoors and allow plenty of time for it to adequately absorb into your skin cells rather than just sitting on top of the skin. 7. Read the labels on skin care products. The truth is that some ingredients may do more harm than good. The more ingredients are listed, the more potential harm they can do to your skin. THE EYES HAVE IT! They dont call them the windows to the soul for nothing! The eyes never lie. If youre feeling and looking great, your eyes will shine and sparkle. If youre sad and lonely your eyes will give you away every time. If you have red, watery eyes due to allergies, deal with them! There are plenty of medications available to eliminate allergy symptoms. Nothing will detract from your appearance faster than red eyes. If you wear eyeglasses, make certain that they do not detract from your appearance. Eyeglasses should complement your eyes, not cover them. If your frames are unattractive, it means you had the wrong sales person. Try again. If you can wear them, consider switching to contact lenses. Make sure you remember to remove them when swimming. You can easily lose them in the pool or worse, if you wear soft lenses you could contract a cornea infection that comes from a parasite found in water. The chlorine wont kill it and the result of this nasty little dude is not pleasant. You are inviting painful corneal infection that could cause partial or total blindness. Try buying different colored lenses. You might discover a whole new you behind blue eyes! HAND IT OFF! Did you know . . . many ancient beauty treatments are still in use today? An example is the East Indian art of painting the hands and feet with Henna. It is known in India as Mendhi and is an ancient Indian art form which has been performed for generations not only in India, but the Middle East, Pakistan and in Africa as well. Women in India traditionally painted henna on their hands and feet, insides of their arms and up their shins most often for a wedding, or other special occasion. The intricate patterns on the hands are particularly beautiful. Nothing will give away your age quicker than the condition of your hands. Lets take a look at some tips to try and hold off the ravages of time. While we dont particularly recommend the practice of mendhi for everyday USA, it would be helpful in covering up some of those age spots, wouldnt it? Try this tip. Apply vitamin E oil directly to the spots to fade the discoloration. There is also a product thats been around since Grandma was a youngster. Its called porcelana and women have credited it for removing age spots for decades. If you spend hours at a time on the computer, be sure you use a rest for your wrists. It will help ward off carpal tunnel syndrome. THESE FEET WERE MADE FOR WALKIN Did you know . . . an average human being loses almost a cup of liquid a day through their feet? Or that a babys foot is made up almost entirely of cartilage? They will harden as the feet grow. Keep a pumice stone handy so you can put it to work on those heels as you step out of the shower. Use a few drops of essential oil in your next footbath! Pamper your feet. Treat yourself to a pedicure! Try a foot massage. Its relaxing and rejuvenating. Try it on yourself or ask your partner and trade off. Everyone wins! If your ankles and feet are swelling, its a sure sign you are holding fluids. Try to avoid sitting for long periods at a time and cut down on your salt intake. Stilettos are beautiful and yes, they do make you look sexy, HOWEVER, you should avoid long walks while wearing them. In fact, you should always wear sensible shoes. Ha! Fat chance, right? Seriously, what about a compromise? Wear sensible shoes when you are coming and/or going from work and keep the heels in a tote bag. For extremely dry feet, lather on a layer of cocoa butter to each foot, slip your feet into plastic bags and pull on a pair of oversize socks. Leave on overnight while sleeping and when you awaken the next morning your feet will feel smooth, silky and soft. Add milk to a footbath for softening the feet. HOW TO AVOID BAD HAIR DAYS They say that a womans hair is her crowning glory. Even so, all women have those days when we wish we could cover every unwieldy strand! Get a good hair cut! It all begins right here. Without a good hair cut, nothing else you do will give you the results you want. In order to have a good hair cut, you need a great hair stylist and when you find one, keep him/her! Jumping around from stylist to stylist can be hazardous to your hair. The old adage about getting what you pay for is very true when it comes to something as important as your stylist. Yes, its possible to find a good stylist at the fast hair shops, but the cost to your hair while searching may be more than you care to spend. Fast hair shops usually employ new, young stylists with little experience. They earn a minimal wage and do not have to invest in hair care products to use on their clients. Stylists that you find in upscale shops and salons are usually independent contractors leasing space in the salon. The salon provides the work station, utilities and in some cases a receptionist to service the stylists. These stylists are generally more experienced and have built a solid clientele. They purchase their own products used in servicing their clients either from the salon or other suppliers and set their own prices. HOW IS YOUR SMILE? Did you know . . . a knocked out tooth may be replanted if you act quickly? Dont clean the tooth, just wrap it in a damp cloth and hustle off to the dentist. If you can get there within 30 minutes youve got a 90% chance of saving it. If you wear braces, get extra calcium. Adjusting the position of teeth can leave small gaps in the jawbone. These need to be replaced with new bone. Take it as a supplement or eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. ITS THE LITTLE THINGS Did you know . . . even in the enlightened period of time we live in, most women do not conduct regular breast exams on themselves? So what is a segment on breast exam doing in a beauty book? Well, in order to use the tips in this guide, you have to be around to do it! Make a self-exam of your breasts part of your daily beauty routine. It doesnt take long and you can do it in the shower or in the bath. Just do it. More than 90 percent of all breast lumps are discovered by women themselves. The majority of all breast lumps are benign. One in ten women will develop breast cancer at some time in her life. Thus far, breast cancer cannot be prevented. But, with regular breast self-examination (BSE) and periodic screening, breast cancer can be detected early and treated properly! If you dont know how to conduct the exam, ask your doctor for a chart that will teach you how. Then just do it! Remember to keep a smile on your face! ———————— In the beginning man worked hard to survive. He had many things to do. Hunting, keeping warm, finding berries, and taking care of his family. He did not have time to worry about being fat, as there wasn’t an issue of fat. It was survival of the fittest, those that were not fit, perished, or had someone to watch over them. Man’s goal was survival. Women labored hard, and many died in childbirth. There were many deaths of their infants, so women kept reproducing to keep the family surviving. They scrubbed, cooked, gathered food and wood and tended after the children. They did not have time to worry about things that made them happy or not happy. Their goal was survival. Well, times have changed, people don’t work physically as hard as their ancestors did, they lose fewer children and the dying in labor has been brought down to a small percentage. Emergency hospitals with ambulances and new technology and medicines have saved the lives of countless people. Living a Healthier life is rather simple. It is the matter of knowing some essential ingredients to happiness. Statistics tell you the following: Those who are married are far happier than those who are not. Those who have some kind of faith or religion are happier Those who go to bed at night and sleep an average of 8 hours Those who have friends and family Those who are mentally and physically healthy Those who have a regular schedule to live by Sure, having extra money makes people happier too. However, the above ingredients are the true essence of happiness. Money just adds extra. Having money and not the above can end up feeling pretty empty. ADD IT TO YOUR LIFE…. Water, you need water. Try to add at least 4 more glasses of water to your daily diet. The rule of thumb for water is 8 glasses per day; and one extra for every ten pounds overweight you are. Fats, you need to know about fats. There are different kinds of fats. Some fats are better for you than others. A rule of thumb on fats is, stay away from hydrogenated fats. These are fats that solidify. They are in store bought cakes, cookies, crackers, chips and even in bran muffins. Read the labels. Choose fats that are polyunsaturated or fats such as olive oil. And, eat some fish to get some omega-3 fats. Carbohydrates are your immediate fuel source. An average is about 55 percent of your diet in carbohydrates. So, a rule of thumb is, figure your protein grams, get around 25% fat per day, and the rest would be in carbohydrates. The heavier you are, the more protein you need and the fewer carbohydrates you will need. Fiber - work up to getting 25 grams of Fiber per day Protein - averages about 20 percent. Women divide weight by 2.2 and multiply that by .8 to get the kilograms. For men it averages one gram per each kilogram of weight. So, a man would divide his weight in pounds by 2.2 then multiply that by .10 Fats - try not to exceed more than 25 percent fat in your daily diet. 30 percent is acceptable, too. That does not mean you can’t have a junk food fast food hamburger … it just means that if you do eat that 55 percent fat burger that you are going to have to cut down on other fat filled foods for the rest of the day to balance it out. Make exchanges gradually. Suppose you drink whole milk … work down to 2 percent, replacing two of your cups per day until you can completely change over. If you are on two percent milk, work down to 1 percent. Add bran to your cereals for extra fiber. Also, add it in your baking. You need to balance your diet with vegetables and fruits, too. Try adding different colors to your plate. Maybe an orange yam, and some green beans, to add color. More variety of food colors brings more variety of vitamins. Eat more raw foods. Remember, exchange things, add things, and do it gradually. Remember, live all things in life in moderation and soon you will be bouncy and vibrant and well on your way to living BEAUTIFULLY! How To Plan A Garden

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Tim Hallinan All great gardens have one thing in common, they were thoughtfully planned before they were built. To plant a successful garden you must have a clear understanding of your sites conditions. A thorough site analysis enables the gardener to make informed decisions regarding design and plant selection. Determined in this site analysis are the following factors; climate & micro-climate, sun & shade conditions, wind exposure, soil composition & chemistry and existing vegetation. Plant hardiness zone maps divide the country into zones based on the lowest average winter temperature. A plant that is adapted to your hardiness zone is one that can tolerate the lowest winter temperature your zone typically experiences. Find out the zone in which you live and use it as guide during your plant selection process. Along with the overall climate conditions of your area, micro-climates within your specific site also determine what is appropriate for your garden. Micro-climates are conditions, such as temperatures, which can vary from spot to in spot the garden. A sunny spot against a brick wall with a southern exposure, for example, will be warmer than its surrounding environment, even during the coldest winter days. In a space such as this, plants which are borderline hardy have a better chance at survival than if planted elsewhere in the garden. Also, however, a warm full sun location can encourage premature new growth on some plants which could damage new shoots if theres a sudden drop in temperature. The canopy of the existing trees can protect plants by reducing their radiant heat loss. In winter, the micro-climate beneath a tree may be several degrees warmer than the surrounding air, this slight difference in temperature can be beneficial to some plants. Furthermore, the trees shade during the early morning slows the rate of thaw in spring delaying the emergence of spring bulbs. Being aware of the sun and shade conditions in your garden is critical to proper plant placement and, in turn, to the long term health of your plants. Improperly placed plants are a main reason for unnecessary transplants. Most plants prefer at least some shade during the day. Observe the light condition of your garden over the course of a few days to determine how much sun it gets. Be aware of the time of day as well. Many plants that thrive in part sun welcome shade during the heat of the afternoon, when the sun is strongest. Plants which demand full sun should be placed where they get at least 6 hours of each day. Shady conditions can vary. There are three types of shade; dappled, part shade & deep shade. Dappled shade perhaps is the easiest type of shade in which to garden. It occurs beneath deciduous trees where there are drastic changes in the amount of sunlight reaching the ground throughout the year alternating between a patchwork of shade and sun in the summer and full sun during winter after the trees drop their leaves. Many shave-loving plants will adapt to these conditions. Many shade tolerant plants, such as trillium, epimedium, anemone and various bulbs have adapted to these conditions by flowering in the spring while there is still quite a bit of light entering the garden. Part shade occurs as the sun moves across the sky. It creates situations such as full sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Only the most sun loving plants will fail to survive in part shade conditions. Its perfect for those plants which tolerate sun but little shade. Afternoon shade in this situation is quite beneficial to plants as the shade will protect them from the sun during the hottest part of the day. If the opposite is true, shade in the morning and sun in the afternoon, some plants will tend to look stressed as the coolness of morning shade gives way to full sun during the hottest part of the day. Deep shade occurs beneath evergreens or in narrow spaces between tall buildings and can be a challenging environment in which to garden. Soil beneath evergreens is usually poor due to the lack of an annual leaf fall which in deciduous forests provides layers of organic mulch. Plants selected for deep shade gardens need to be shade demanding not just shade tolerant. These plants may tolerate some morning sun but not more than an hour or so of afternoon sun. Before you plant your new shrubs, perform a soil test to determine its pH level. Soil test kits are readily available at most greenhouses and nurseries. Most plants prefer a pH level somewhere between 5.8 and 6.5. Outside of this range it becomes difficult for plants to get the nutrients they need. To adjust a pH level which is too high, meaning the soil is alkaline, add aluminum sulfate. Soils which are acidic have low pH levels; adding lime will create more favorable planting conditions. Soil composition is also critical to the growth of healthy root systems. Most plants will not do well in exceedingly sandy soil or in poorly drained clay soil. Grading and conditioning the site to provide adequate drainage should be done before you begin planting. If youre planning a garden in clay soil composted bark or other course textured organic material will improve drainage. It may also be necessary to build up the garden, creating raised beds. This will allow oxygen to reach the roots and cause excess water to drain away from the plant rather than collecting beneath it. Because they are so well drained, sandy soils dont hold water or nutrients well. Sandy soils, as opposed to clay soils, require the addition of water retentive organic matter such as manure, compost and peat moss. When adding your soil amendments avoid uncomposted bark or wood chips as they tend to rob plants of nitrogen Compacted and poorly drained soils contain little oxygen, which plant need in order to grow. Though some plants tolerate soils with low oxygen, most grow poorly or die. Although most types of soil can become compacted, clay presents plants the most difficult challenge. Other conditions such as existing vegetation should be considered carefully. Most of the time existing trees can add character to a garden so think about how you may use them to your advantage. By pruning some lower branches you may be able to let enough dappled light in beneath the tree to plant a woodland garden. If theres a tree on the property which seems to stand out from the rest use it as a focal point in your garden. Getting to know the conditions of your site before you begin planning and planting can be the difference between success and disappointment. Properly planned gardens ensure the time you invest in you garden is worth it, as each properly placed plant thrives. T Hallinan is a landscape designer and builder in Massachusetts. Your Weight Loss Plan for 2007

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne Most people think they have to starve themselves and do hours of cardio to lose fat. But that’s not true. You can lose weight and increase your metabolism with a hard diet or boring exercise plan. I strongly recommend a diet of whole, natural foods combined with fast strength and interval training workouts to help you get results in a hurry. Q: How much fat can I lose with strength and interval training? Answer:The short answer is, ‘a lot’. To be more specific, you should be able to lose one pound of body fat each week (in addition to following sound fat loss nutritional practices). At the same time, you should expect to gain or maintain muscle. Overall, total weight loss will be about a pound per week. Q: Why should I only use each version of a workout for 3-4 weeks? Answer:We want to keep the element of variety in the training program to achieve consistent fat loss (see the above article). Nothing, except poor eating, halts fat loss like staying on a training program for too long. By switching it up on a frequent basis, you’ll avoid fat loss plateaus and keep making gains in strength and fitness at the same time. Q: I’m starting strength and interval training today and I’m unsure what is meant by interval training. Also, as I improve can I reduce the low intensity time to 30 seconds, and then if I improve further can I add more sets? Answer:One set of interval training is defined as: Each time you do an interval and follow it with a rest period. Therefore, to do 3 sets means you will do three intervals and you’ll rest three times. As for improving, focus on increasing the intensity of the intervals. As you get fit, the once relatively hard interval will soon be an easy interval. Therefore, you will just need to increase the resistance. As we improve, simply use a higher level on the stationary cycle. You can reduce the rest periods to 60 seconds, but we don’t often reduce them any further. The key to success is the work interval intensity. Don’t sacrifice work intensity by reducing the rest interval too much. We might also increase the duration or number of work intervals, but we don’t do any more than 12 intervals in a workout. Q: What is the rationale for the eating plan? Answer:1. Recent research* has shown that subjects lost more fat mass and had a greater reduction in their systolic blood pressure when they substituted almonds for complex carbohydrates in their diet. *Wien, M., et al. Almonds vs complex carbohydrates in a weight reduction program. Int. J. Obes. 27: 1365-1372, 2003. 2. The post-workout nutrition was chosen based on John Berardi’s recommendations given in the last newsletter. According to John, “During the post-workout period, the body makes a distinctive metabolic shift. It shifts toward fat oxidation (burning) at the expense of carbohydrate. In other words, most of the energy your body uses during recovery comes from fat. At the same time, carbohydrate storage becomes a priority; the body’s attempt to refill those muscle and liver glycogen stores.” 3. Recent research** has shown that, “the American-healthy pattern was characterized by high intakes of green, leafy vegetables; salad dressings; tomatoes; other vegetables (eg, peppers, green beans, corn, and peas); cruciferous vegetables; and tea.” **Kerver, J., et al. Dietary patterns associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease in healthy US adults Amer. J. Clin. Nutr. 78: 1103-1110, 2003. Perfume - What’s The Big Stink About?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Michael Russell Ah, perfume. You have to sometimes wonder what women do without it. It seems they can’t help but spritzing that smelly stuff all over their bodies. Not that men mind very much. Let’s face it, a man LOVES a woman who smells nice, but who determines exactly WHAT a nice smell is? One of these days somebody is going to invent a perfume that smells like, well, you know. So what’s the deal with perfume? Why so mesmerizing to the opposite sex? And what in the world is the stuff made from anyway? For all we know it could be made from chicken gizzards. Fortunately, it’s not. Perfume is made from about 78% to 95% of specially denatured ethyl alcohol and a remainder of essential oils. The perfumes that are made up of the 22% oils are the most expensive, going for as much as $100 an ounce or more. I’m sure a little too rich for most people’s blood. These perfumes are called perfume, literally. The next costliest on the ladder are the ones called Eau de Parfum, which are made up of between 15 and 22% oils. After that comes Eau de Toilette, which is made up of between 8 and 15% oils. Next on the totem pole is Eau de Cologne, which is made up of about 4% oils. And finally the bottom of the barrel, for those who really like subtlety, is Eau Fraiche, which is made up of about 1 to 3% oils. Then of course there are fragrance categories, a TON of them. Here is a listing. Floral, Oriental, Floriental, Chypre, Green Marine and Fruit. Typical plant products include anise, bay leaf, bergamot, cardamom, cedar wood, eucalyptus, frankincense, gardenia, geranium, iris, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lilac, lily, lily of the valley, magnolia, moss, neroli, orange, orris, patchouli, pine, raspberry, rose, sage, sandalwood, tuberose, vanilla, violet and ylang-ylang. I wonder how many guys can really tell the difference between one and another. It probably doesn’t matter since perfumes are a 10 billion dollar a year industry. Not bad for smelly water. So when did perfume use start? Actually it started thousands of years ago in Greek and Roman civilizations. It wasn’t a big commercial industry back then. The first real commercial use of perfume didn’t start until the early 20th century. One of the earliest famous perfumes that is still made today Chanel No. 5 created by Ernest Beaux for Coco Chanel in 1921. It is essentially made from ylang-ylang and neroli, with a heart of blends of jasmine and rose all above a woody base of sandalwood and vetiver. How much of each is a secret and something that any perfume manufacturer would give anything to get a hold of. Perfume manufacturing is extremely competitive and formulas are carefully guarded secrets. But getting back to Chanel No. 5, today a bottle of this stuff is sold every 30 seconds. You can only imagine what that comes out to in income for a whole year. Today there are many perfumes, the most popular being Chanel No. 5, Charlie, Chantilly, Elizabeth W. The 411 on Secured Loans: What You Need to Know

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Mary Simone Any time someone borrows money from a bank, the funds lent are referred to as a loan. Any time when the bank asks for collateral (a security that the bank takes charge of if you are unable to pay, like your home or property), thats called a secure loan. A first secured loan on property is considered to be first charge, while a second loan (perhaps a home equity or second mortgage) is second charge. Secured loans are easier to obtain than an unsecured loan, as the bank has a means of repayment in the event that you are unable to. There are many types of secured loan programs available, offering different benefits and such to the borrower. But no matter which one you choose, there are some things you need to know before you agree to or sign anything. First, secured loans come in a variety of amounts (typically averaging between 3,000 to 50,000, but have been seen as high as 250,000 with some lenders). They are repaid on a monthly basis for a predetermined amount of time (usually between 3 and 25 years). Some loan programs may have a prepayment penalty (a fee attached to the loan if it is paid off earlier than expected), so be sure to ask your lender if this applies to your loan. Second, the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is the interest youll be charged for borrowing the money. Your APR will depend on several factors, including your credit history and equity available in the property. Its a wise idea to compare interest rates from different lenders to be sure that youre getting the best one possible. Next, you need to know how to apply for a secured loan. The Internet revolution has changed the lending industry for the better, as its no longer necessary for you to leave your home to apply for a secure loan. Although you can visit your local branch of your favorite lending institution, its much easier to login online and enter your information, or to pick up the telephone. Finally, you need to know how governing laws are protecting you. All secured homeowner loans are subject to the Consumer Credit Act of 1974. This act contains strict guidelines as to how money is lent out, covering loans up to 25,000. (Loans for greater amounts are unregulated). Before such a secured loan is granted, you will have to sign a legally binding credit agreement for the terms of your particular program. A consideration period of 7 days is to be granted to you by the lender. Lenders are to offer you insurance options to cover your monthly loan payments in the event that you are unable to pay under specific circumstances, such as illness, unemployment, an accident or death. All coverage options will vary between lenders, and so will the cost, so be sure to check with your lender for any details, specifically as to what is covered and what is not. Four Essential Principles of Emerging Market Success

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Daniel Harris Emerging markets are high risk and high reward. In my work as an attorney representing Western companies in emerging markets, I have concluded there are four essential elements to emerging market success: a good partner, an open mind, active participation, and extreme patience. I have seen enough essential similarities between such diverse countries as Russia, Korea (ten years ago when it was still an emerging market country), Vietnam, and even the Gambia and Papua New Guinea, to believe certain core generalizations hold true for all or nearly all emerging market nations. Just as a good concept, a strong market, and good execution are necessary in all countries, so too are these four simple principles the keys to success in emerging market nations. PRINCIPLE ONE: A Good Partner is the sine qua non of Success. The quality of the local partner is the indispensable element for emerging market success. So where do you begin? Start with due diligence. Before doing business with anyone, you must first determine what you need from your partner in the particular country in which you will be conducting business. In my experience, foreign companies need a local partner who is effective, cooperative, and (most important of all) trustworthy. Emerging market countries almost always have less-than-fully-formed legal systems. Their laws are oftentimes slanted towards the government and away from free markets. Their courts are slow and often corrupt. Form takes precedence over substance in ways completely unfamiliar to Westerners. One small technical miscue on your part might eliminate your right to sue your partner for having stolen all of your money. It might even lead to you and your company being kicked out of the country, while your assets remain. Of course you should do your best to avoid technical miscues, but the better strategy is to pick your partner well. So what should you look for in a local partner? Political connections? Yes and no: Yes, because you probably will need someone with sufficient dexterity to maneuver around often-suffocating business laws and a bureaucracy that may try to cut in on your business at every turn. No, if you think that is all you will need. Just as in the West, the politically connected are usually more a “government type” than a business person. Partnering with someone in an emerging country with whom you would never consider partnering back home is a mistake. Political clout in emerging market countries is often more effective for avoiding legal responsibility for something like a debt than it is in generating business revenues. I have seen countless instances where a foreign company partners with someone because he “is tight with the governor,” only to see the business crushed by the new governor as part of his house cleaning. The best partner is politically connected only to the extent necessary for business success. Your partner’s character and reputation are your protection in countries where the court system is not. Do not partner in any sense of that term without having conducted thorough due diligence. Get to know your potential partner. If he is legitimate and wants to work with you for the long term, he will expect you to want to get to know him better and think nothing of your wanting multiple meetings before signing any deal. Use every source you have to find out about your potential partner. Check his references, particularly those of other foreign firms with whom he has worked. Hire a local lawyer or investigator to confirm he and his various businesses are in good standing with all creditors and taxing authorities. If your potential partner is in Vladivostok, Russia or Qingdao, China, hiring a lawyer in Moscow or Shanghai will probably not be good enough. Find someone you can trust with contacts where your potential partner conducts business. PRINCIPLE TWO: Keep an Open Mind. Assume Nothing. Doing business in an emerging market means taking nothing for granted. I have a mantra for my own legal work in these countries that translates well to the business world: “Assume nothing, but assume that you are assuming things without even realizing you are doing so.” Things will be different. Very different. Things you take for granted in your home country might not exist in the emerging market country. Things you take for granted in your home country might be the exact opposite in the emerging market country. Things you think will be totally different in the emerging market country may be exactly the same. Things you thought you knew about emerging market countries based on what you know from another emerging market country may be completely different in a neighboring country, or even in another region within the same country. The principle, one more time: Keep an open mind, and assume nothing. PRINCIPLE THREE: Participate in Everything. In many emerging market countries, local businesses take advantage of corruption to avoid complying with laws. This may work for the locals, but it won’t work for you. The easiest way for a local rival to drive you out is for you to do something illegal. Neither you nor your government will have good grounds to complain if your rival gets your business closed down due to your illegal activity. It might even be your own partner who reports you so he can assume full ownership and control of your business. You must have your own people on the ground, leading, training, and instructing on business methods, business ethics, efficiency, and quality control, among other things. We have a saying in our law office that one day of face-to-face meetings with local counsel is equivalent to one month of telephone calls and e-mails in terms of getting things done. This is equally true on the business front. PRINCIPLE FOUR: Exercise Extreme Patience. This principle stems from the maxim that everything takes twice as long as you think it will. If it takes twice as long in the West, triple that in emerging market countries. You’ll go in both as a businessperson and a teacherand in both roles, the learning curve of your partner will almost certainly take way more time to deal with than you think. For example, many emerging market countries have a history where “bad business” meant “thinking long-term.” A year or two after the fall of Soviet communism, I was involved in a matter where an investor put $250,000 into a Russian joint venture. The business very quickly was making good money and all indicators pointed towards steadily increasing profitability. But, quite quickly, the Russian company stole the $250,000. Was it so irrational for him to think so short term in a country where the government and tax systems had such a history of unpredictability? Remember: It takes patience to encourage change of mindset. Extreme patience. EMERGING MARKET SUCCESS Emerging markets cannot be approached with a quick-kill mentality. Above all else, emerging market success demands a good partner, an open mind, a high degree of participation, and extreme patience. It is certainly risky. It can also be very profitable. Thanks Mankind!

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Tyler Brooker I got to thinking today and have to say, we rock! Humans I mean. For some reason, as I sat there, eating my McDonalds, I started thinking about technology. Man was I impressed! We have so much, and we dont think about it enough. I suppose it really doesnt make much of a difference to think about it anyways, but life would just be so much harder if it wasnt 2005. We have evolved into quite the creatures. We have technology like computers and IPOD’s to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. When was the last time we said thanks? Better yet, who are we saying thanks to? I suppose we thank God. He did, afterall, create us. What else did I think about? Medicine! How about all those machines and stuff we have to make sure we get a proper diagnosis, so that we can get proper treatment. Like MRI’s and Blood tests and all that. Go us! And all those medicines that we have, which allow us to enjoy a long happy and healthy life. Basically, we have made life more entertaining with technology, and then in turn technology made our lives longer so that we could enjoy it. Thats a good cycle, and you can sign me up for it again this year. Pretty much, I just wanted to take a moment and think about what mankind has done, and thank those who did it for us. THANKS! Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Khieng Chho The art of garden never fails to transform an idle tract of land into a beautiful and lively environment. Gardens feed the spirits longing for beauty and grace as it provides a venue to witness the wonder of nature and the comforts of home. While plants and trees are enough to make a garden delightful, the landscape can surely be enhanced by installing garden dcor. There are many types of garden decors each having unique features and purposes for your garden. Here are some garden decors: Arbors, Pillars, and Gazebos these are large structures that can add a good focal point to your garden. Having large structures can create an illusion of having a large space. These structures can also serve as platforms for aerial plants. Climbing foliage such as vines may also cling to these platforms, creating an elegantly classic garden effect. Statuaries and Wind Sculptures these also provide good focal points for the landscape. Such structures add a sense of prominence, strength, and sturdiness. Bird feeders and bird baths these simple additions to a garden attract beautiful creatures the landscape. Since a garden is generally inadequate without the chirp of robins and jays, installing something that would make them feel welcome is a good way of cheering up the garden. Other architectural ornamentation architectural structures create a good balance with and contrast against the natural elements of a garden such as shrubs and trees. Man-made structures enhance the sight of nature, making it appear more familiar and inviting. Trellises and obelisks these are good in blocking obtrusive structure and other unwanted views. It is impossible to have a perfect view all the time as obstructions cannot be completely eliminated. Luckily you can install structures that can block eyesores. Trellises are good for this purpose because they can act as support for clinging vines. Fountains and ponds water dripping and splashing can be great way to relax. Fountains are usually installed to add a natural ambience that can draw positive energy to your garden. Having a fountain in your garden can also make it a suitable place for meditation exercises like yoga and tai chi. If you have the budget, you may choose to have elaborate and grand fountains installed. You my also choose to add simple rock fountain that greatly serves its purpose at such small a cost. Landscape lighting you can enjoy your garden even without the sun, the moon or the stars. By installing simple lights on trees and other plants, you can create a beautiful setting which can even be romantic and enticing. Lighting does not have to be permanent. You can use Christmas lights or even lanterns and candles to illuminate your garden anytime. Lights can also prevent strangers from hiding in your garden. Garden furniture the best way to enjoy the beauty of your garden is to stay in it and in order to do so you might need chairs and tables specifically designed for the outdoors. These could also serve as picnic furniture for those times you would want to have barbecue outdoor dinners. The garden experience can greatly be enhanced by garden dcor.
