Secrets to Getting that Dream Job in IT

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Joseph Walling Whether you are looking for that dream job or are just trying to get a pay raise or promotion, there are 10 things you can do to improve your chances. In general these 10 things fall into 2 categories; the first is building your portfolio and the second is in building your network. While technology is causing rapid change in most industries and for many jobs, it is changing even faster for Information Technology (IT) workers. You may not want to hear this, but as a result of this rapid change, you may need to put in more work and effort than you can squeeze into a 40 hour work week. Are you already putting in long hours? If not, would you be willing to if it could help you find that dream job, get promotions, and pay raises? If you arent willing to put in that extra effort and time, you might need to rethink your career path as you wont be able to keep up with the changing technology. 1. Get involved This is a big one. Find out what professional IT organizations are in the area and attend some meetings. If you find some of them particularly valuable, step forward and offer to help. Did you know that most of the best jobs arent advertised in the paper or on a job board? If you spend all your time responding to help wanted ads in the paper and on job boards and sitting by the phone waiting for that call; then you will miss out on the truly great jobs. You must get out and network with others. Attending professional meetings is one of the ways to develop a network. Now that you are attending meetings, why not volunteer to help with some aspect of the organization? This keeps you from being just a face in the crowd and gives you even more opportunities to interact with others in the group. However, if you volunteer for something, be sure to follow through or you will leave people with a negative impression. Others will assume that you would fail to follow through this same way in a work environment. 2. Be selfless Being selfless ties in with the first item above. If you join a professional group; dont join solely for the purpose of getting a job or it will be obvious to the others. Join because you enjoy doing what the group does and get involved for this reason. There is no need to torture yourself attending meetings that are painful to you. If you find that attending these professional meetings are painful, then maybe you need to evaluate whether this is the right career for you. 3. Get certified Getting appropriate certifications in your desired field is especially important if you have no experience. It shows that you have put in some extra effort and at a minimum have the aptitude to do the job. If you are fortunate, the company you are working for will cover some or all of the costs associated with certifications. In the case that they dont, what should you do? Do you sit around and complain and wish that they would; or do you do something about it in your own time? Ultimately, it is you that is responsible for your own professional development. Take control. You dont have to go to that $3000 class. Get a book or some self study material and study on your own. Does your local professional group offer any kind of training or study groups? If not, can you get one started? 4. Get experience Many employers are only looking for employees experienced in the area they will be working. They are afraid to hire someone, spend time training them, and then have them decide that they are not cut out for the job or that they will gain the experience and move on to a higher paying job. How do you get experience when you are right out of school or trying to move from another occupation into IT? Sounds like catch 22, doesnt it? Actually, the answer is quite simple (though not easy). Volunteer to do something related to the position you are looking for. If you want to write VB.NET or C# software, then write some programs. One suggestion is to approach a non-profit group and find out what type of program you might write for them to automate their processes and become more efficient. You could also write a program that you can either sell or give away. Then put up a web site and try to sell or give this product away. Now add this link to your resume along with a description. Yes, this requires a good deal of work on your part, but think of how much you have learned, as well as what you are showing prospective employers. You will stand out from all of those other students or developer wannabes because you put forth that extra effort and learned something about software development in the process. This also shows that you love doing this type of thing. A wise employer is looking for people who love what they are doing and go above and beyond what they can learn in a 40 hour work week. 5. Write articles or books If you are a beginner, this is probably not where you would start. However, if you have some experience and are looking to move to the next level, here is an outstanding way to do it. Think about the people you consider experts. Havent most of them written articles or books. Writing a book is hard work that can take up a lot of your time, but it is a sure way to gain credibility and be seen as an expert. If you dont have the time for a book, you can write articles and post them to the big IT article sites. You can find a list of some of these sites here. 6. Read Technology is changing so rapidly, that you must figure some time into every day for reading. One attribute of the ideal candidate is a voracious appetite for knowledge; and they will spend the time reading technical articles and books as well as business oriented ones. It is great to have the technical knowledge, but if you cant figure out how to meet business needs with the technology, you wont be as successful. 7. Help on forums This is closely related to #2 above on being selfless. By answering questions for others in forums, you are honing your skills and developing a reputation as being someone who knows what they are talking about. You never know when that person you help may be hiring. 8. Dont hog the knowledge. I am sure most of you have worked with someone that was so insecure about their job that they tried to keep what they do and know a secret. To make themselves invaluable, they write a program or set up a process, but dont let anyone know how they do it. These individuals are no fun to work with and hurt the team as a whole. They also cant take vacations without causing great pain for the employer. If you share the knowledge, your coworkers will appreciate you for it. Your boss probably notices which type of person you are, and if they have any sense, they will promote the person that plays well with others over the lone cowboy. Besides, if you share your knowledge you will be able to enjoy your vacations. 9. Be willing to listen and learn from others Technology is moving too fast for you to be the expert on everything. This doesnt mean that you have to accept everything someone says as truth. However, if someone tells you something you dont believe, dont call their bluff right then and there. Instead keep an open mind, go and research the topic, run a few tests if appropriate; and then based on the data decide what is correct. In other words dont stand around and argue over each others viewpoints for 30 minutes when a 5 minute test will tell you the truth. Now, after having done the tests to prove which theory was right, publish your results. This way you know what the answer is and you can accomplish several of the above items at the same time. 10. Let your network know While you dont want to sound like you are begging, let people in your network know that you are looking for a new position and what type of position you are looking for. If you have been selfless and helped them in the past, they are more likely to return the favor. If you are currently employed, be sure that your network knows to be discreet. If you enjoy working for your current employer, be sure that you communicate your professional desires to them so that they have the chance to accommodate you before you go looking outside. The bottom line is that if you have not done any of items 1 through 9, you wont have much of a professional network that you can tap into. If you surround yourself with other successful people and follow the advice in the 10 points above, you will open all sorts of doors and will be extremely successful in what you do. Note that this process takes time and consistency. The keys to all of the above are to build relationships, trust, knowledge, and skills. This doesnt happen overnight. Don’t Ignore the Signs: How Emotional Infidelity Can Ruin Your Relationship

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

By Keishia Lee Louis Emotional infidelity can start with a simple hi or a wink. It begins in a boardroom or a chatroom. One spouse says, “What’s the problem? We’re only friends.” The other spouse can’t believe the reassurances. So the jealousy builds and a wedge is driven between partners. Sometimes nothing really is going on, and sometimes an affair is in progress. It’s only a matter of time. So how can you tell if your spouse is a potential cheater? How can you stop a relationship from becoming romantic outside of your marriage? Here are five topics to think about before determining if your marriage is in the danger zone. 1. Secrecy: Do you feel as though your partner could be telling you more about his or her new friend? Or do you hide the details of your platonic relationship from your spouse? If so, why? It’s best not to keep secrets from your partner, even if you think he or she will be hurt, angry or jealous. If you want a successful relationship, trust and honesty is the one factor for marriage that should not be compromised. 2. Displaced Trust: Is information that should only be shared between husband and a wife, shared outside of the relationship? Topics like sexual intimacy, irreconcilable differences, personal finances, and detailed accounts of your partner’s shortcomings are best left within the constructs of your marriage relationship. 3. Comparing: Does your spouse compare you to friend(s) of the opposite sex often? Or do YOU feel as though your spouse could improve in the areas that your special friend excels? Comparing once or twice may not be a problem, but habitual comparison is a warning sign. 4. Time Management: What type of time do you spend together as a married couple? Is it mainly dutiful, like paying bills or going to conferences for the kids? Or do you actually date– one-on-one, no kids, family or friends around? If not, and you find yourself, or your partner, engaged in date like activities outside of your relationship, stop it. Either invite your spouse or don’t do it anymore. Coffee talk can turn to pillow talk in the blink of an eye. 5. Attraction: Do you feel as though your spouse like the way his/her special friend looks? Are you attracted to the way your friend looks or the way he/she does something? If so, address this issue with your partner and then try to refocus your attention on each other, rather than the outside party. If three to five of these topics need to be addressed in your marriage, I urge you to get professional help either from your religious leader or from a professional counselor. Heartburn Medication

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ken_Marlborough] Ken Marlborough Over 60 million Americans suffer from heartburn. It is possibly the single most income-creating medical problem for the pharmaceutical companies. Heartburn is a burning pain starting behind the breastbone and spreading upwards. The stomach acid, backing up the wrong way from the stomach, enters the esophagus and inflames and irritates the esophagus. The lower esophagus sphincter, either through weakness or getting relaxed due to alcohol or drugs, allows this leak. There are three different approaches to manage this problem. The antacids provide a simple temporary cure. These medications, mainly made of calcium carbonate, aluminum and magnesium, neutralize the acid in the stomach. They act very fast, but are effective only for short periods (1 to 2 hours). Antacids like Pepto-Bismol coat the esophagus so that the acid does not come in contact and cause heartburn. Medications like Gaviscon form a barrier of foam between stomach and esophagus. The H2 blockers are the second type of medications used to cure heartburn. Drugs like Cimetidine, Ranitidine, Nizatidine and Famstidine provide relief from the heartburn by suppressing acid production in the stomach. They take about 1 hour to take effect and last up to 12 hours. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) are the third class of medication for heartburn. PPIs like Omeprazole and Lansoprozole turn off acid production by a different method from H2 blockers. PPI interferes with the proton pump in the mucus lining of the stomach at the last stage of acid production. It is effective within one hour and the effect lasts up to 24 hours. There is also a combination medicine: antacid for fast relief and H2 blocker for longer relief. We do not know, by any systematic study, how effective herbal remedies are or how they work. But many physicians accept and recommend them as supporting medication. Ginger root, aloe vera juice, basil leaves, bitters and aromatics all have their proponents. Self-treating heartburn with OTC drugs is quite reasonable, up to a point. But if the problem persists for longer periods than recommended by the drug manufacturer or if the patient finds no relief with the medication, it is time to consult a physician. The heartburn could be a symptom of a more serious underlying problem. Why Are We Overweight?

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By S. Wagner You know, there is so much to do about finding a weight loss diet or routine, that many of us completely forget about why we’re overweight to begin with. Maybe if we concentrated on the causes of why we’re overweight, we wouldn’t be overweight to begin with. Well, this article is going to tackle the issue of just why we’re overweight to begin with and maybe if we’re aware of the causes, we won’t have to go on a diet to begin with. One of the main reasons that we’re overweight, especially in the United States, is what we eat. Not how much we eat, but what we eat. The truth is, if we ate the right foods, we could eat as much as we wanted, within reason, and not gain any weight at all above what was our normal weight for our age, height and body type. The problem is, we’re a society that lives at McDonalds. Do you have any idea how many calories are in a Big Mac? Would it shock you to find out that the number of calories in one of those fast food nightmares is almost all the calories we need to maintain our weight for the day. The problem is, we still have two more meals we have to get into our systems. That’s why so many of us are overweight. Maybe if we didn’t live in the fast food establishments we wouldn’t need to diet. Just a thought. Another reason we’re overweight is that we don’t exercise. When was the last time you did anything other than sit at your desk at your cozy little 9 to 5? Most of us haven’t done a sit up since we were in grade school. No wonder we’re overweight. The only way you burn calories is by exercising, and sitting at your desk and typing at your keyboard is not exercise. Well, when we don’t burn those excess calories that we soaked up at McDonalds, those excess calories turn to fat. That fat is not only our excess weight, but also the reason that so many of us are dying from heart disease, diabetes and other ailments related to our diets. And then of course there is the fact that as we get older our metabolisms slow down. That means we don’t burn up as many calories as we used to. When this happens, it means we have to exercise even more and eat even less. Well, we keep eating the way we did when we were 18 but we don’t exercise the way we did at that age. That combination is a deadly one. If we were to just concentrate on those above areas and eat a sensible diet and get enough exercise on a daily basis, there wouldn’t be any need for most of us to go on a diet, except in the rare case where one’s metabolism was so slow that no matter what they did they couldn’t lose weight. But that would be a very small percentage of us and not the millions of people who are walking around overweight as I am writing this. Why are we overweight? You just got the answers. Don’t look so surprised.
